Acting with Purpose

I have kept a note on my desk for years that simply states act with purpose.

“It is wonderful what great strides can be made when there is a resolute purpose behind them.”

~Winston Churchill

Purpose doesn’t require great acts, just sensible ones.

There is Always Room for Improvement

We should all periodically dust off the skills that we possess and make certain that we still have a solid understanding of the skill and its best use.

“Three quarters of the mistakes a man makes are made because he does not really know the things he thinks he knows.”

~James Bryce

We will assume that Mr. Bryce did not mean to exclude women; he was merely a product of his time.  Keeping our eyes and ears open for changes and improvements to our skills keeps us fresh and relevant.

Writing to Help Thought

Sometimes we just can’t get a clear head about something – a task, an idea, or what have you.

“I don’t know what I think until I try to write it down.”

~ Joan Didion

The act of writing can help us to order our thoughts and straighten out any tangles.

Getting to the Meat of It with Basics – Grammar Rules

Writers and Grammarians aren’t two sides of the same coin, so stop fearing grammar rules.  Or using a lack of knowledge to claim you can’t write.

Invest in a simple grammar primer to keep at your desk like:

Striving, Growing, Moving Forward

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”

~Robert Collier

“Follow your honest convictions and stay strong.”

~William Thackeray

“If you set goals and go after them with all the determination you can muster, your gifts will take you places that will amaze you.”

~Les Brown

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have mastered, you will never grow.”

C.R. Lawton

“Life is Change.  Growth is optional.  Choose wisely.”

Gaining in Knowledge

There is such an amazing breadth of interesting information and potential experiences to be gained in this world.

“But all knowledge has to be won – like every other thing that is worthy of us sons of God.”

~Sir Wilfred T. Grenfell

We cannot begin to learn everything, but we can sample quite a bit.

Practice Writing

We have been told that it takes time and effort to be a champion at anything.  It takes simple effort on a regular basis to keep a skill in good form.

“Iron rusts when it is not used; stagnant water loses its purity and freezes over with cold, so too, does inactivity sap the vigor of the mind.”

~Leonardo da Vinci

Practice your writing skills regularly and you will find that your skills have grown.
