Don’t Be Afraid

Sometimes those folks that led the sink or swim school of thought were on to something.

“Courage is more exhilarating than fear, and in the long run, it’s easier too.”

~Eleanor Roosevelt

The hardest part is often that moment just before you start.

This IS the Time and Place for Action

I have believed for years that a time of fear and anxiety is one of the best times to step forward into hopeful action.  (Carefully considered, of course, and not rash.)

“The time when you need to do something is when no one else is willing to do it, when people are saying it can’t be done.”

~ Mary Frances Berry

Be the solution, or at least be the start to a solution.

Daring to Be

As a society, we seem to have left behind the ‘how dare you?’ vibe in the past couple of decades.

“All serious daring starts from within.”

~Eudora Welty

Dare yourself to step into something that you have always wanted to try, but for whatever reason hesitated.

Independent Thinking – Holiday Style

I gave a speech at Toastmasters last night in which I used the line, “independent thinking was prized in our household and words were savored like candy”.

“Without moral and intellectual independence, there is no anchor for national independence.”

~ David Ben-Gurion

Be open to information, filter it through your own understanding and decide how to make it your own.

For all in the U.S. on the eve of a new Independence Day, I hope that you have a Happy and Safe 4th of July holiday.

What Will Be

Have you ever said to yourself, ‘I can’t do (x) because I will be (y) when it is completed’?

“It is never too late to be what you might have been.”

~George Eliot

You will get to (y) age, whether you take action on (x) or not, but how pleased you will be with yourself when you get there depends on your actions now.

Writers Retain the Essence of Many Stages

It is a boon and can be a curse to recall the swirl of preceding life stages, but so necessary for our best writing.

“Don’t laugh at a youth for his affectations: he is only trying on one face after another to find his own.”

~Logan Pearsall Smith

Really, doesn’t this quotation represent most writers of any age?

We Can, We Will, We Do

It is never comfortable to be unsure, but even less comfortable to realize later that we missed an opportunity.

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

~Theodore Roosevelt

When we wait until we understand perfectly, are perfectly situated and have all the tools that we think that we need, we are sometimes in for an interminable & unnecessary wait.

The Relationship between Achievement and Success

Define the goal of success for yourself, getting there requires a series of achievements on your part.

“My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success.  She said that achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you.  Success is being praised by others, and that’s nice, too, but not as important or satisfying.  Always aim for achievement and forget about success.”

~ Helen Hayes

You, Taking Charge

You know best what you want, and where you really want to be.

“People always wait too long for other people to change their situation.”

~Kenwyn Smith

Lead the charge.

Understanding the Arc

We crave simplicity, understanding and clarity; which is why we like stories.

“The criterion of simplicity requires that the minimum number of assumptions be postulated.”

~ Albert Low

Sometimes it takes time and distance to clearly understand how to present a situation in the best, most straightforward manner.
