Hard, but Worthwhile

Gaining strength at something that is challenging gives much more pleasure and sense of accomplishment than doing something that comes easily.

“Obstacles cannot crush me.  Every obstacle yields to stern resolve.  He who is fixed to a star does not change his mind.”

~ Leonardo da Vinci

Getting past those early fears and objections make small successes in your written communications that much sweeter.

Being Open to Possibilities

Writing about our world isn’t the same as being able to script it.

“Things turn out the best for people who make the best of the way things turn out.”

~John Wooden

Regardless of how things unfold, we will have the opportunity to find a story.

Enjoy the Process

I admit that this one comes naturally to me, I am fascinated with the process of all things.

“Not every end is the goal.  The end of a melody is not its goal, and yet if a melody has not reached its end, it has not reached its goal.”

~Friedrich Nietzsche

We can learn so many interesting nuances if we pay attention all along the way between the start and the goal.

Better Writing is Just a Start Away

Sometimes something that we want to do seems so hard to achieve, so we avoid making the effort at all.  We set up artificial barriers that say ‘I’ll do this new thing once I have more time’.

“The man who insists on seeing with perfect clearness before he decides, never decides.”

~Henri Frederic Amiel

When we were young we didn’t think that we had to win the Tour de France to learn how to ride a bike.  The same holds true for improving our skills, or learning new ones now.  We just have to start somewhere.

A Place for Levity, and Levity in its Place

Bringing a smile to the reader’s face offers a chance for deeper connection.

“I don’t cry over spilt milk, but a fallen scoop of ice cream is enough to ruin my whole day.”

~Terri Guillemets

Finding the sweet spot of shared humor is like an extra scoop of ice cream.

Exploring New Things

We like the tried and true, our comfort zone.  There are so many unsettling things outside of this space.

“Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit.”

~Frank Borman

We might just like some new thing so much it becomes part of our new and improved comfort zone, but we would never have known if we hadn’t decided to take the chance.

Getting Everything Ready

However we keep track of things, we each have some sort of revolving list of things to tackle.

“Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.”

~A.A. Milne

If we work to develop a system to keep like things together or a place to gather the necessary items for a task, we will be better able to focus on completing the task to the best of our abilities.

Question those Pricks of Doubt

We all have them, the pricking, nagging insistent thoughts that crack our confidence.

“Our doubts are traitors, and oft might make us lose the good we might win, by fearing to attempt.”

~William Shakespeare

Explore the reasoning behind the doubt before letting it pierce completely through your new venture.

Noting the Complete Moment

Writers have this as an advantage, since we tend to be skilled at observation: to have a high level of awareness in a moment.

“Be where you are.  Otherwise you will miss your life.”

~Buddha

We can share this awareness with those around us.

Thinking Boundaries

We all have mental walls that stand around what we know, what we believe, what we want.

“You’re only bound by what you think.”

~Adam Schwerner

What if we carved in doors, erected ladders, or just knocked down a wall or two?
