Better Writing is a Learned Skill

There will always be those who have natural talent, or who gain amazing skill through hard work and determination.  We believe this about sports, but somehow seem to think that writing is either an innate talent or not.

“Ability is what you’re capable of doing.  Motivation determines what you do.  Attitude determines how well you do it.”

~ Lou Holtz

We would all like to be J.K. Rowling, but we don’t have to be in order to be successful practitioners of solid writing communications.

Making the Choice

We are faced with so very many choices in our lives, throughout each day.  We can get lost in the details of the choices themselves.

“We have the chance to be either architects or victims of our future.”

~ Daryl R Conner

We need to remember to conserve enough of our energy to apply it when our choices really count toward gaining ground to our own definition of success.

Good Writing Habits

We have been told so much about creating good habits, and the disparity between the effort we must put into creating them versus the ease with which we can leave them behind.

“Life is mostly habit.  So now’s the time to figure out which habits you want to cultivate to carry you through the rest of it.”

~Mary Schmich

Better writing habits should lead to better writing and help us to meet out other goals through more effective communication.

Written Communication

Communication skills are high on the list for importance in the job descriptions of most office positions.

“Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers.”

~Isaac Asimov

Decide to improve your writing, this is an achievable goal.

Breaking the Barriers to Your Writing Self

It is almost as automatic as breathing for most people to say that they can’t write.  There is a fear of that blank page.  If you are able to convey your meaning in a conversation, then you will be able to do so in writing with a little bit of practice and some encouragement.

“Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you.”

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

The hardest part is deciding to get started.
